Exploring Contemporary Mexican Fiction Through History, Society, and Literary Innovation

Anyone interested in reading and discussing literary texts.

 

  • MAIN GOALS OF THE COURSE

 

General Goals

  1. Students will analyze the novel as a genre through the works of three of the most important authors in contemporary Mexican literature.
  2. They will discuss historical and social aspects derived from their readings.
  3. They will reflect on the importance of literature as a testimony of reality.

Interactive lectures, guided discussion, literary analysis.

 

TOPICS AND SUBTOPICS:

The Novel of the Mexican Revolution. Everyday narrative and literary innovation.
1.1 Agustín Yáñez: Life and works.
1.2 Analysis of Al filo del agua (At the Edge of the Storm).

The New Mexican Realism.
2.1 Carlos Fuentes: Life and works. The intellectual figure of Mexico.
2.2 Analysis of La muerte de Artemio Cruz (The Death of Artemio Cruz).

Intimist Literature and Gender Themes.
3.1 Enrique Serna: Life and works.
3.2 Analysis of Fruta Verde (Green Fruit).

 

BRIEF CURRICULAR BIODATA OF THE PROFESSOR

Abraham Miguel Domínguez is a writer and professor. He holds a Ph.D. in Literature and Literary Creation from the Centro Cultural Casa Lamm. His work includes publications of literary criticism in various media outlets, as well as academic research and cultural dissemination essays. He has served as an editor, translator, and peer reviewer for several Mexican publishing houses.

He is the author of the essay collections The Victorian Orgy: Seven Steps to Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and Nineteenth-Century English Authors, and of the novel The Nature of Love, published by Aliosventos.
